Why do we love this wine?

I can’t speak highly enough of chenin blanc - it’s always at the top of my favourites list. This is classic for Margs; pear drop, honeysuckle, and a hint of vanilla at the fore, then gaining complexity as it comes up to room temperature. Think quince, ripe pear, preserved lemon, and a little brioche. A precise, confident expression of Margaret River chenin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters creates perfect conditions for Chenin Blanc's natural acidity and flavour development. The region's maritime influence helps retain the grape's characteristic freshness while allowing for the complex honeysuckle and pear notes that define quality Australian Chenin. This terroir expression is evident in the Wild Garden's precise balance of fruit intensity and mineral backbone.

While most white wines are served cold, this Chenin Blanc reveals its full complexity as it warms slightly above typical serving temperature. The initial pear drop and honeysuckle notes evolve into more sophisticated quince, preserved lemon, and brioche characteristics as the wine opens up. This temperature flexibility showcases Chenin Blanc's versatility and the winemaker's skill in crafting a wine with multiple flavour layers.

A 94-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Chenin Blanc in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that surpasses most wines in its class. This score reflects the wine's precise winemaking, authentic regional character, and complex flavour profile that develops beautifully in the glass. Such high ratings for Australian Chenin Blanc are relatively rare, making this bottle particularly noteworthy for collectors and enthusiasts.

Organic viticulture typically produces grapes with more concentrated flavours and better soil expression, which translates to the wine's authentic Margaret River character. Sustainable farming practices preserve the vineyard's natural ecosystem, allowing native yeasts and beneficial microorganisms to contribute to fermentation complexity. This approach likely enhances the wine's terroir-driven qualities, including the distinctive mineral undertones that complement the fruit-forward honeysuckle and pear notes.

The wine's medium body and complex flavour evolution make it excellent with dishes that have both richness and acidity. Try it with roasted chicken with herbs, creamy seafood risotto, or aged goat's cheese - the vanilla and brioche notes will complement creamy textures while the preserved lemon character cuts through richness. Asian cuisine with ginger and lemongrass also works beautifully, as Chenin Blanc's natural acidity balances spice and umami flavours.
